between biochemistry and pharmacy

this is part of the advice of one of LYN user name:dunaskwhy posted on Lowyat.net on the choices of pharmacy and biochemistry.

i value it very much, it helps me to get a roughly clear idea on these two professions.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I guess I can give you some advice here. My ex-Gf is a pharmacist and my current Gf and elder brother is a Biochemist. 1. Now, pharmacy has had tremendous interests from students in recent years. Its a sprouting profession and if the ministry of health plan to change the dispensing right regulation, the Malaysia still needs plenty of retail pharmacist. The course roughly takes 4 years to complete and upon completion you need to undergo 3 years of compulsory government service before practicing in private sector as a pharmacist. Most people have the idea of a pharmacist being a retail or hospital pharmacist where they dispense medication to patients. There is a lot interpersonnal contact here, one might find satisfaction working with people. However, from what I heard from my pharmacists friends its pretty boring working as a retail pharmacist. The other carier pathway you might be interested working as a pharmacist is industrial pharmacist working with drug companies. But again, you need to complete the compulsory government service. Basically its more of the drug itself rather than person. What my ex is doing at the moment is studying her PhD in pharmacology. Research for a paper about protein signalling. More intellectual challenging but you basically work like a hermit in the lab talking to your cell culture. Even without doing a PhD, you can go into research once you finish your degree that another career pathway. Generally doing research gets you the least pay most challenge and satisfaction depends on whether your experiment works. 2. Biochemistry is also has quite wide career pathways as well as study scope. Its less soughted here in Malaysia as there is less emphasis into research. Most people gets into research after they finish their degree and at the meantime study for honours/masters. What they study is mainly everything in relation to organic chemistry - Proteins, DNA, phospholipids, enzymes, protein channel, glycoprotein these are just some examples of them. Most gets to be expert in things they do during their lab years and stick with the field they familiar and research in the particular field. Its good challenge and again, satisfaction depends a lot on whether your experiment works (lots of frustration when something they do failed for after several experiments and one would take a week) However at the end of the day when you able to publish a paper on the things you do you get lots of satisfaction. Interpersonal interaction is limited. You work with a small group of lab people and from time to time you go for conferences. ]My brother is one of the pioneer group that goes to antartica for research under UM which started I think with the endorsement of Dr. Mahathir. Pretty interesting if you ask me. However its not everyone's cup to tea. He is planning to finish his PhD and go into teaching. To get a decent pay most people does not work in Malaysia. Singapore pays roughly 3.5k for fresh graduate with more job opportunities. Plenty of job available here too in Australia and I do not know about other country. So if you planning to get into any one of these course and you just finished SPM, obviously you would need to take Chemistry and Biology.

Destined to University Malaya

Well, it had been almost 2 months since i have completed my matriculation study at KMK.

I remember the date, from 18th April till now 23 June. Alright it has been such a long time.

I received my UPU result on friday( 19 th june) and to my suprise, i get my 3rd choice--biochemistry at University Malaya., meaning that no more pharmacy for me, Well, initially and till now, i admit i have so dissapointed , thinking of the reasons why i have been rejected by UPU(KPT) for not getting Pharmacy course.I study hard and get good result in PSPM1&2( i strike 4.00 for both semester), but couldn't ponder why i still fail to get my 1st choice. That is too disappointed to me. But to me,it is still ok a Biochemistry is still my preferred course.

But i should have faith to God, maybe who know i may be somehow happy and doing better in biochemistry than pharmacy.I believe God has paved my way,the best that i can do is to try my best in everything i can while in the 3 years of my university life.

Khang Way rang me yesterday, through him, i just know that i am not the only unlucky few who didn't get 1st and 2nd choice, instead he is more pity than me, getting biomedic which is his last choice, i was rather surprised , thinking that how come like that?! i can't think of that.Khang way is always passionate about medicine and aspiring to become a doctor,But the course he get is biomedicine, which is more to reseach pathway. though what is study maybe more to medical stuffs, but can't lead to doctor pathway without MBBS. So i try to advise him to appeal while we are going to UM.

I try to check on the the course syllabus that is included in Biochemistry at UM, and have come out with the following result:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Biochemistry of Nucleic Acids and Molecular Biology
Analytical Biochemistry
Biochemistry I&II
Biochemistry of Protein and Enzyme
Biology Practical I&II
Pharmacology
DNA Recombinant Technology
Immunology
Microbial Physiology and Biochemistry
Quantitative Biochemistry
Food Biochemistry and Nutrition
Hormone Biochemistry and Metabolic Control
Advanced Enzimology
Plant Biochemistry
Insect Biochemistry
Toxicology Biochemistry and Detoxification
Molecular Sequencing Analysis
Biochemistry of Lipid and Glycerol
Physiological and Medical Biochemistry
Environmental Biochemistry
Pesticides Toxicology
Applied Industrial Biochemistry
Neurochemistry
Membrane Biochemistry and Signal Transduction
Topics in Biochemistry
Industrial Training in Biochemistry

---------------------------------------------------------------

Thus, that are all about biochemistry topics that i have to learnt .

i will be heading to UM this saturday, i got 4th Residential college.Wonder who will be my future roommates. but still i pray for i can have good roommates=)

UM will be having orientation from 28th June to 3rd of July, thus i will be having a tougher week ahead.

Oh, i am ready for it!=)

Pros and Cons in each of broadband in Malaysia

Well, i come across this useful facts and opinions regarding the various ISP provider, broadband in malaysia. It may guide us in the way we buy the broadband for internet connection.

And here below is the opinions of Henry Yew posted in Recom.org.It may be used as a guideline for all.=)

===========================================================================
For your information, to those who are living in Ipoh, if you are thinking in terms of stability, it is far better to opt for Streamyx (although it sometimes wreak havoc to your nerves). Although there is 3G in Ipoh, unfortunately there are some places where its coverage is weaker. Therefore, I find Celcom 3G Broadband not performing at its optimum capacity quite frequently at home. Of course, this is not the case in Kuala Lumpur.

The good thing about Streamyx is that it has got a higher download speed as compared to Celcom 3G. For RM66 per month, you would be able to enjoy a download speed of up to 512 kbps on Streamyx but Celcom 3G would only offer up to 384 kbps for RM68. The ADSL modem that is used for Streamyx is much cheaper now (you could get it for less than RM100 as compared to five years ago when mine cost about RM400). On the other hand, the HSDPA modem used for Celcom 3G Broadband would cost no less than RM200 (RM199 if you are lucky). I know that I bought mine for RM599. I know, I have been shortchanged.

Nevertheless, Streamyx does not offer you the portability that Celcom 3G has to offer. If you are someone, like me, who travel around quite often and would even want to have a better Internet connection at your workplace and at the same time is able to provide you with Internet access when you are at home, then you might want to consider Celcom 3G broadband instead of Streamyx. The disadvantage of Streamyx is that you can connect to it only on Streamyx-registered telephone lines. This means that if you register your Streamyx account to be used at your home in Ipoh, you can also use your account in your uncle's home in Kuala Lumpur PROVIDED THAT your uncle's telephone line is registered with Streamyx. However, when we say that a telephone line must be registered with Streamyx, it means that you must have a Streamyx account as well. It also means that if your uncle's telephone line is registered with Streamyx, then he's got his own broadband connection as well! You wouldn't need to use your Streamyx account in the first place.

I'd say that Maxis Broadband is not worth getting at the first place. At RM120 per month, you are bound with a 24-month contract. Of course, a customised modem is provided to you as well, however after the 24-month contract, should you choose to terminate the service you'll have to return the modem as well. It can be said that the RM120 fee includes the "rental" of the modem. No doubt the download speed is up to 3.8 Mbps, however Celcom 3G can also offer you that at RM99 per month, and you will only need to purchase your own modem which cost about RM200 at today's market price.

DiGi's Edge might be an alternative as well. However, it does not run on 3G and has a slightly lower download speed compared to Celcom 3G. It charges a fee of RM66 per month. So come to think about it if you pay an extra of just RM2 you would be able to upgrade to Celcom 3G which should offer you a better service. Therefore, between Celcom, Maxis and DiGi, I would always prefer Celcom.

I personally use streamyx at my home for my PC and i find the speed is rather fast and have not encountered any problems with the connection so far.
MAybe i shoud consider using celcom as suggested by henry when i am switching to my laptop later.=)

I teach physics!=)

Yesterday, i had a busy routine..A phone ring, that signify another wonderful day for me. Aunt Lay Han calling me to teach her daughter..hehe.i can revive my teaching spirits again.
All this while i failed to contact her, i want to ask her whether her daughter or son need any tuition for this school holiday, but there is always no connection of line at all..thus i am wondering does anything went wrong with them?
Till yesterday i just got to know that :Oh, they are having a vacation to Hong Kong. Nice trip then ..Aunt lay Han bought a key chain to me...plus 2 packets of Hong Kong famous biscuits. haha..

That is very nice then. yesterday lesson was quite satisfying as i manage to cover up the whole chapter of Heat..(physics form 4, chapter 4)as requested by Sharlinie(Aunty lay han's daughter who is currently having her SPM this year)..hailing from PCGHS, i have no other comment about this girl as she is doing quite fine in other subjects but Physics is the hardcore subject that can beat her down. You can guess how difficult would it for me to deliver my teaching then.

physics need a concept to do well. Frankly,i thought my physics would have been rotten to death, i haven't touch it for almost 2 years since i was having my SPM 2007 till now. I study Biology at Matric and wasn't indulge in any physics concept all this while. But, surprising or should i say luckily, i can still manage to remember the application and the concept of physics and was able to teach a junior about all these stuffs. cheers to my memory that went well till now!=)
I give the exercises and explanations thoroughly ..i am trying to make her to grasp the concept well..I used my teaching materials wisely..finally, the outcome is rather amazing and encouraging---she had done it pretty well. All questions are solved and those difficult questions are being slowly incorporated into her mind=)

I hereby presenting this useful quote from a physics teacher:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Physicists use technological tools, especially computers, to perform their measurements and analysis of scientific data. As such, you need to be comfortable with computers and different forms of technology to. At the very least, you should be able to plug in a computer and its various components, as well as know how to maneuver through a computer folder structure to find files. Basic familiarity with computer programming is helpful.
One thing that you should learn is how to use a spreadsheet to manipulate data. I, sadly, entered college without this skill, and had to learn it with lab report deadlines looming over my head. Microsoft Excel is the most common spreadsheet program, although if you learn how to use one you can generally transition to a new one fairly easily. Figure out how to use formulas in spreadsheets to take sums, averages, and perform other calculations. Also, learn how to put data in a spreadsheet and create graphs and charts from that data. Believe me, this will help you later on.
Learning how machines operate also helps provide some intuition into work that will come up in fields such as electronics. If you know someone who's into cars, ask them to explain to you how they run, because many basic physical principles are at work in an automotive engine.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Candidly, i love biology more than physics.I don't like physics because i hate maths and dislike crumpling all these formulae into my mind. But contrary,i enjoy knowing the physics truth
Today, i am again venture into the 'teaching world'at 2pm sharp.. and was looking forward to teach another new chapter---light..=)

Today i have tried another test ..a career personality test that give me my real revelation of roughly which kind of career suite me better.i think the result is pretty accurate. I am actually a bit losing direction, i don't really know what i am going to do in future, what kind of job that i might be end up as??but one thing for sure is : It must be about academic fields. HAHA! I LOVE TEACHING!

I have become tuition teachers for years...thus,to me, it is always best and pleased to give and share thoughts , knowledge and information to anyone, regardless of whether they are illiterate,of different races , hailing form different countries or anything else.=)

Quiz: What Should You Be When You Grow Up?

Source:http://www.testq.com/ (this is quite a nice site for us to discover lots of quizes !

the result is as follow:

You should work with People
Can’t imagine anything worse than being locked in a room
alone? Love to chitchat and make new friends? We knew it. Usually gregarious,
responsible, and kind-hearted, you should definitely consider looking into a
career where you can really make a difference in someone’s life. Sure, getting a
big paycheck is great, but you’re probably going to shine brightest while you’re
helping other people out. Of course you don’t have to sacrifice your own
happiness or financial well being to do good for others — there’s plenty of
success and money to be made for yourself while you’re making things easier on
other people. Doctors and pilots spend every day helping people, right? So
consider working with people. It might be the best choice you ever made!

career personality test!

Looking for the perfect profession? The answer lies in your personality! TestQ's Career Personality Test was developed by top PhDs to reveal the work traits you most often display. It will analyze your transferable skills, working style, personality type, and ideal employer. The test will also pinpoint your workplace strengths and direct you to a profession that best compliments you.

I did this career test and the result is perplexing!=)

The result as follow:

ESTJ
That means that based on the standard measure of
personality traits, you have a quiet determination and sharp mind — you're very
focused and buckle down when it comes to work. You are the type of person one
looks to in a crisis. While others may provide emotional support in a situation,
your clear and logical thinking allows you to solve the problem at hand. You may
be firm, but your actions are generally fair. You believe in putting in the work
and don't expect favors to get ahead. Additionally, you want objective feedback
to determine your success. You are a careful thinker and get all the details
before making any decisions. You don't jump to conclusions and stick with the
facts provided. In other words, you're the go-to person for the real story, not
the spin or gossip. While others may sometimes see you as stubborn, they

begrudgingly respect your ethics and straightforward approach.

Do you guys think that the result is somehow very accurate?..HAha. for me , i am quite a serious person and have always wanted to make my tasks go perfect. Quality and productivity mean a lots to me. =)

Seriously,I need feedback to further improve my performances as well as to yield the good productivity..haha..of course it is even better if high efficiency and constructive outcomes can be achieved, that is the best things and the aim that i wanna reach thus far. Who don't want that?

Thus as a conclusion, the result is 80% accurate ...at least for my case! =p

President Obama Speaks to the Muslim World from Cairo, Egypt

This is a speech on America’s relationship with Muslim communities around the world. Being born to a Muslim father, growing up in a Muslim country and the first African-American to be elected US President, Obama has the special charm in bridging the difference between the west and the Islamic community.

i don't know why some conservatives would complain because obama's Middle East policy is largely unchanged from Bush's late Middle East policy right before he exited. probably just a knee jerk reaction. besides, we've done as much we could with our hard power for our security, obama is simply trying to increase our soft power. conservatives shouldn't fault him for it. it doesn't make much sense but to simply do it out of habit.

70% Public University Graduates Jobless (!?)

Source:http://educationmalaysia.blogspot.com/

At that rate (70%) potential students should opt not to pursue higher education instead. Anyhow, I do agree with the stats that Comp Sci and IT grads are by far the biggest number of unemployed graduates. This is in accordance with the Internet boom of the late 90's / early 00's. Hence the high number of intake in such courses during those times. And the spill out is evident now. Besides, entry requirements are usually lower than other applied sciences, even at good foreign universities. So post-SPM students at the time enrolled en masse for these programmes that they think could provide them with lucrative jobs. But, they were sorely mistaken when reality kicks in after enrolling.

Computer science is a highly technical area. A student must have strong logical thinking and be able to understand problems quick. A strong mathematical foundation is required. Many students, and I believe the weak ones especially, thinks that computer science is all about "messing around" with computers with a bit of programming and so on. An easy job where one dresses smartly, and runs around meeting clients.

As many have pointed out, there is no shortage in demand of IT professionals. It all boils down to the attitude of the graduates that's causing this high unemployment rate (for IT). Skills mis-match and technical inefficiencies can be adressed, they can be taught and learned. The difference is in the attitude. Of course, this only applies to IT and similar graduates (e.g. Engineering). Some areas like Biology, Chemistry and Polymer Science have their fair share of unemployment, but that's cause of the lack of jobs in their industry.

Away for a camp

i will be away from tomorrow till Saturday (3th June -6th June) because i am going for a camp.

This is the camp specifically tailored for youth and i am really looking forward to join it. Dynamic camp being held at Stallion Apartment , somewhere near Tesco is a platform to train the youth to be independent, improve their soft skills, interpersonal skills and so on. Throughout this 4 days 3 night camp, i do hope i can learn many things while i were there, and of course meet some new friends too. Such activities will more or less benefit and help me to make use of my long holidays well.

Cheers, will be posting only after i come back.=)
