Reminiscence of Moments in Hanoi

Before I come to Vietnam for my project, I expect things will be always fine with the great support of the AIESECERs.

But, in reality, my experiences with joining the AIESEC FTU Hanoi project has been a great one because it has shaped me into a more independence person with a know-how on survival skills.

Putting aside all the projects thingy, let me dwell more into my moment generally in Hanoi.

I feel extremely touched by the immense generosity of Vietnamese people

I had a general feeling that they all want to stand out from the crowd and be ambitious with their lives and not be stopped by anything. By being educated, they now want take responsibility for their acts by knowing exactly how to protect themselves. This is outstanding.

During this project I also learned patience and to be more understanding. It is difficult to work with people from a lot of different cultures and backgrounds. It clearly demands some flexibility.

From my one month stay in Hanoi, I changed from being scared and cautious to falling in love with this country and everything about it. Looking back, I miss the motorbike rides, the friendly people, and all the amazing foods and drinks of Vietnam.

When you look back at your AIESEC experience many years later, what matter most will not be the bad things, but the friendships that you’ve made, and the stories you have lived to tell. I wish for you to always remember the moments that we shared together, and to come to me if you ever need someone to talk to.

Thank you for allowing me to spend the past month with you, to share with you, and to learn from you. Every person regardless of background and cultures has his or her own story, and I feel honoured to have been a small part of your unique story. I believe in hope, I believe in achieving the great hope, and most importantly, I believe in having them as my great and awesome friends!;)

Some take away lessons from work

Teachers typically assigned to come for our class to teach us in school. We are not given any special right to choose whichever teachers that we like or favour to teach us in whatsoever subjects we want, unless it will be a different story if it is a tuition class.

In the workplace, it is just the same. When we step into the working world, we will have a manager whom we are supposed to report to and there will be no specialty for us to choose whoever person we like to be our manager or boss. Hence, having a good manager is definitely important in our career life.

I am blessed I can have experience for having various managers throughout my assignment in different departments. But at the same time, what I am aware of now is to take every opportunity present to learn as much as I can.

Well, yesterday, there is this manager whom I am now working with, giving me some valuable pieces of advices. I would like to share them here:
For a fresh graduate like me, it is better to make as many mistakes as possible and then learn from it. For a fresh start, it is reasonably to have made mistake because only through the mistake we make, we will be able to learn. Be patient even when you are scolded by your boss for the mistake you make for this will be a very grounding platform for you to always remember it and take it as your lesson.

Always give your 100% efforts in the work or projects your boss assigned you to do. After I have done with my project and present it to my manager, he asked me how many percent that I think that I have done for this project and I replied him I have given 70%. Then, he asked me back where is the other 30%. What I keep it for? The reason why I answered 70% is because I thought that I have still some things which I need to learn from him, but he said this is not what he mean.

Thereafter, he said to me that in order to get your boss to be impressed is not do what he expects, but beyond what he expects. Just say, your boss give you a project and want you to submit to him by tomorrow. If you submit to him by tomorrow, it means you are meeting his expectations. What if you submit to him by today, would you think he will be impressed by it?

Well, personally to me, it is not actually the time or the speed that counts, but the ultimate quality of the works that we produced. But somehow rather, my boss is right about it, only though speed and quality at both will we be able to make the good impressions.

Besides, speaking about the quality of the work. My boss is pretty particular about the slide show that we prepare and present. I would like to pinpoint some of the things that he is so particular about:

1.Font

Do no ever use fancy fonts in your power point presentation. For example: How are you?
It is better just to stick to a proper one- Times New Roman: How are you?

2. Taboo while doing presentation
  •  When presenter wishes to pause for a while and blank the slide, it is very common to see the presenter will use some cardboard or piece of paper to cover the projector screen. In fact, it is not necessary to do so because you can easily blank the screen by pressing the button SHIFT + B (if you want to blank the screen black) or SHIFT + W (if you want to blank the screen white). It is just as simple as that.
  • Press the number 4 + Enter on the keypad if you wish to go back to the slide say number 4. You do not have to necessarily press the up and down button to go back to the slide you wish to.
3.Do not squeezed the original size of the photos. It will just spoilt the image of the photos.

4. For drawing, make sure it is according the proper scale.

So, you could see my boss comments even when it is just a short presentation of my assignment. Working life is all about learning from scratch and be humble in our approach to seek knowledge! :)

Graduation Dinner

On the 12th October 2013, we have the yearly graduation dinner for all the Ma Sheng members.

It was a Saturday and I am able to make it for the dinner since I am staying in Klang at the moment. So, we have our dinner together at the New Formosa Restaurant @SS2.

it was my first time being there and the restaurant serves steambot style of food. I would not say it is the best steamboat in the town. The main ingredients of the food which is the steamboat soup is just so so, with rating of 5/10.

For the second round, we went to Ochado!:)

Anyhow, it is a nice gathering with the juniors and my batch mates who have graduated this year.

To current batch juniors Bee Heong, Amiko, Pei Chen, Ai Teng etc etc, do add oil in your batch for the Ma Sheng organization.

Last but not least, congratz to Alice, Zee Man, Apichat and Osward Kenji for successfully graduating this year! All the best in your future undertakings! :)

Working Life

Well, glad to say that I have started my new job in a new company after I went back from Hanoi.

Time flies and it has been a year since I graduated. I am not sure whether I have achieved my new year resolution but I think I have achieved at least some of them.  Another 2 months plus and it will be going to be brand new year, the year of 2014!

I have moved to a new company, with a completely new environment and colleague and bosses which I hope I could adapt and thrive well in this new company. Life is about making decision, and I hope the decision which I made will be a fruitful one as I believe I will look forward to strive for a better future. Knowing my career aspiration is what matter the most as right now, I really hope by being in this new company, I can be able to grow my career aspiration.

Well, to be honest, moving to a new environment with new colleague and bosses demand a lots of patience, humble and a heart for learning. Since I am in this completely new environment, I have to learn the company policy, culture, methods of doing things from scratch. Besides, being selected for this program, which I believe I will have a chance to develop my career aspiration, I need lots of dedication and perseverance in order to learn, learn and learn throughout the assignments to various departments in the company.
The key words which I want to always remind myself of are humble, eager to learn, dedicated, smart, sociable, and honest.

I miss my life when I was a student, miss the time when I can hang out with friends, going to shopping mall once every week, organizing a study group together, having fun and laughter till the midnight.
I miss my life as a student where I can have a chance to go to other countries for an exchange, to study for a course with people from different countries, to have field trips around the places of interest around the country, to teach highs school students from different cultures and backgrounds etc etc. All these things are difficult to come by if you have stepped into the working world. So, for people who are still studying, do appreciate the chances available and take whatever you can to make it to the fullest of your life! J

Sometimes, I even think of furthering my master and be a student. Just because the fact that I am not ready for job market and my love for study and travelling. But I still believe that I need to step into the working world to gain experiences and money. Some people might end up in their own business and making a good money out of it but not many will have the capital to start their own business. For me, as part for a stage to transit from university to working world, we need to learn to see and experience the world.

Hence, for now, it is the crucial time for me to discover my career aspiration, to learn from the work and people and to be humble to seek more knowledge. It is not always the case where you found your dream job and the job that you really like, but being able to know what you are doing is the key most important skill. After all, the first few years of our working life is always the most challenged one.
